'tender is the flesh' by agustina bazterrica, under a year
i read this because i saw it on a tiktok about 'disturbing books' and the tiktok had dazai osamu's 'no longer human' in it so i was like 'oh this is probably gonna be a good book'. i finished reading it at 5:30am and stared at the ceiling for 20 minutes trying not to throw up
'notes from underground' by fyodor dostoyevsky, under a year
fyodor dostoyevsky's writing is supposed to be serious. i know this. it's still incredibly fucking funny to read about this deranged man 1. invite himself to the birthday celebration of a man he dislikes for vague reason 2. get lied to about the time so that he'll show up an hour early, realise they lied about the time to him, and leave. because they don't want him to be there 3. show up an hour early and STAY THERE AND WAIT FOR THEM even though he KNOWS they definitely lied because they don't fucking want him there 4. be completely socially inept for the entire celebration 5. get drunk and yell at the people there, all of whom could beat his ass easily 6. challenge one of the attendees to a duel 7. leave, get in a sledge, lament over his own behaviours, and punch the sledge driver in the back of the neck for literally no fucking reason
'no longer human' by dazai osamu, 5 years
this was the second piece of media in my life that made me feel like there were other people in the world who were like me, even if they were awful people. i bought the illustrated version by junji ito when i was like 14 and it really resonated with me, even though the protagonist is Like That
this is my favourite book
'inferno' by dante alighieri, 2 years
i read this while i was in my last year of school and it is so fascinating to me. a wonderful read. my 2nd favourite book
'warrior cats' series by erin hunter, 13 years
i read this when i was a little kid. unironically this shaped me as a person. it's not even that good it was just like crack cocaine to me at age 6 and it's stuck with me forever
'all tomorrows' by c.m. koseman, 2 years
i also read this while i was in my last year of school. i love it very much it's one of my favourite books. i pre ordered a hard copy like a year and a half in advance because i adore it so dearly
'wings of fire' by tui t sutherland, 8 years
i read this as a kid and this was actually the series that propelled me into fandom spaces. this was what led to my downfall.
'wolves of the beyond' by kathryn lasky, 10 years
i read this as a kid and this was actually the series that propelled me into fandom spaces. this was what led to my downfall.
'i have no mouth and i must scream' by harlan ellison, 1 year
this is a great story if you are actually fucking media literate and not stupid like everyone on tiktok
'stormbringer' by kafka asagiri
this made me fucking bawl ugly style it was so bad. whether chuuya is human or not is stated at the end of the book but the whole point of the story is that it doesn't MATTER whether he's human or not and i cannot reread this because it makes me sob
